On road trips and sound journeys

Sat Nam Yogis

I’m excited and preparing for an epic car journey in just 2 weeks (epic for me at least). I’m planning to travel to SA via through Broken Hill crossing the western NSW desert country. I’ve never been this way before and while I’m excited and looking forward to new places and experiences, I’m also noticing the fear of the unknown rising up in me.

It is not unusual to feel emotions that range from excitement and delight through to fear and worry all over the same thing. It’s both the positive and negative minds at play. The negative mind is our safety net. It’s that little voice that calls out danger when we get to close to the cliffs edge. The positive mind is our bravado, the sense of adventure that knows no fear (and can lead us into trouble if left unchecked). They are both valid and help to keep us safe and moving forward, but they can also stop us moving forward even when it is safe or take us too far over the edge and into harms way.

Taking this trip is a good exercise in balancing these two very important but opposing minds. Thank goodness for the neutral mind, the mind that can see both positions equally and make a fair judgement between the two. The neutral mind is also known as the meditative mind and I have been exercising this to assist me in mentally and emotionally preparing for the trip.

Keeping a daily practice of yoga and meditation helps to keep me balanced in my everyday life. When faced with a challenge, like driving across the desert on my own, I boost it up a little. Taking a little extra time to sit and explore the emotions that are arising. This gives me the opportunity to dive into my fears and ask are they valid and is there something they are trying to tell me? It also makes space to reality check my expectations and allows me to find a level of calm that will support me to the best experience.

Before I leave I want to support you as well, to the best experience of YOU with yoga and sound.

There will be a two week break from weekly classes and a month break between sound journeys while I’m away so here’s what you need to know about classes and events.
